Theme: Business Etiquette in Islam

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) happened to pass by a heap of eatables (corn). He thrust his hand in that (heap), and his fingers were moistened.

He said to the owner of that heap of eatables (corn): “What is this?” He replied: “O Messenger of Allah! These have been drenched by rainfall”.

He (the Holy Prophet) remarked: “Why did you not place this (the drenched part of the heap) over other eatables so that the people could see it? He who deceives is not of me (is not my follower)”.

The act of cheating or deceiving in all forms is a grave sin and not a virtue of a true Muslim business practitioner.

In today’s e-commerce world, we have witnessed a spike in scamming cases. This includes parcel delivery scams, loan scams, impersonation scams, investment scams, banking-related phishing scams. As Muslims, we should always be honest in any form of our dealings and avoid cheating and deceiving others for our benefit.

In Surah Al-Mutaffifin, Allah SWT said: “Woe to Al-Mutaffifin. Those who, when they have to receive by measure from men, demand full measure. And when they have to give by measure or weight to men, give less than due. Think they not that they will be resurrected (for reckoning). On a Great Day, a Day when mankind will stand before the Lord of the Universe? Nay! Verily the deeds of the wicked are recorded in Sijjin. And what will make you know what Sijjin is? A Register inscribed. Woe that day to the deniers”.
