FAQ #63: Original branded goods are usually pricey. Is it haram if we buy counterfeit or imitation goods?

Suppose it is clear between both buyer and seller that the goods sold are imitation products. In that case, it is not technically forbidden for us to purchase if that imitated goods hold their own trademark.

This is because the goods’ defects and qualities are clear, and such goods are only imitating the original product’s extrinsic qualities.

However, for copyrighted goods that are counterfeited and do not hold their own trademark, it is impermissible to buy and sell such goods they falsely hold the original trademark.

Hence, such transactions involve deceiving people and profiting unjustly.
