The Prohibition of Selling Blood, Ovarian Eggs, and Semen in Islamic Law #
Original Question: There are blood banks, ovary egg banks, and semen banks in our current society. For young and healthy individuals, can we sell our blood, ovary egg, or semen?
Blood is a human need. There are many cases where a human being may need blood support during medical emergencies.
The scholars have therefore allowed blood to be donated but not to the extent of selling it. A hadith by Imam Bukhari narrated that the Prophet ï·º said that putting a price on blood is prohibited.
Whereas for ovary egg and semen, they are both the determinants for descendants and linage. Although adultery does not technically occur, the mixing of linage will still happen outside the family institution defined and permitted by our shari‘ah.
Therefore, we are not allowed to sell or donate both ovary eggs and semen.
