FAQ #147: How to do zakat on halal Sarwa investments?

Zakat Obligations on Investments: Understanding Nisab and Haul #

Original Question: If my investment value at the start of the year (Jan) is eg: S$6.5k, and end year is S$7.5k (Dec), but my investment value is below the June nisab only, but above the other 11 months’ nisab, do I still have to fulfil my Zakat obligations at the end of the year, where my inv value is 7.5K?

Answer:

The haul for zakat on investments is the day you start investing and not when nisab is reached. Only for zakat on savings does haul start when nisab is reached.

The zakatable amount (assuming it is a portfolio of investments) is the total amount of investments at the end of the financial year (December) and is above the nisab.
For your example will be: 7.5k * 2.5% = S$187.5.
